Promoting books and providing students a voice in selection is one of my passions as a school librarian. This is a post that is continued from my original post on Oregon Reader’s Choice Award:
Styling Librarian: Literacy Promotion Fun, ORCA- 4th-5th Grade
I consistently run three literacy judging programs at my school every year. Two of these wonderful programs, BCCCA and ORCA, are run by volunteers affiliated with Oregon Association of School Libraries and Oregon Library Association:
for K-2nd grade: Patricia Gallagher Award program http://www.oregonread.org/gallagheraward12.html, for 2nd-3rd grade: BCCCA- Beverly Cleary Children’s Choice Award program – http://oasl.memberclicks.net/bccca-home, and for 4th-5th grade: ORCA- Oregon Reader’s Choice Award – http://www.olaweb.org/mc/page.do?sitePageId=109508.
New titles were selected for 2013 recently for both BCCCA and ORCA which activates me into a little bit of a promotion machine. I enjoy creating resources for each program and then sharing them with colleagues around the state. I hate the idea of people starting from scratch vs. being able to share and use materials… These same colleagues are AMAZING also at sharing what they create.
Here’s my second sharing session:
Beverly Cleary Children’s Choice Award: 2013
I created bookmarks, a slideshow, and a movie promotion. I usually don’t promote ORCA and BCCCA until May when I complete the present year’s promotion but I like to create these in advance so I can completely focus on creating OBOB, Oregon Battle of the Books, promotions in early May. (I run Oregon Battle of the Books as the chairperson and love promoting the division book lists for 3rd-12th grade. This program accommodates around 400 schools around Oregon with around 15,000 students impacted by our program.) OBOB Webpage: http://oboblsta.pbworks.com
